If you are a crocheter, odds are you have heard "you could make money selling your work!" or "you should sell on Etsy!" Or perhaps you have even wondered to yourself "how can I make money crocheting?" I think it all crosses our minds at some point, and the good news is that if you want to pursue it - you have options! One way for you to make money with crochet is to design your own patterns. It's the route I've chosen! But knowing how to get started as a designer is daunting to say the very least. That's when you will absolutely want help from a pro. Luckily for us, Marie Segares just published "Design It, Promote It, Sell It: Online Marketing for Your Crochet and Knit Patterns" and it is just what you need to get started!
I can speak with first hand experience, that the process of becoming a crochet designer isn't always intuitive. To start, all you need to do is to make up your own pattern. Sounds pretty simple, right? Well....not quite. Designing the pattern is only the first step. The next, and in my experience, more involved step is marketing yourself and your designs. That's where Marie's book comes in.
"Design It, Promote It, Sell It: Online Marketing for Your Crochet and Knit Patterns" outlines all of the different marketing considerations you should be aware of when you are trying to establish yourself as a crochet designer. Take it from me and my personal experience, you do not want to go into this blindly! I will admit that I was not at all intentional in planning my marketing strategy when I decided I was going to be a "crochet designer". Had I had a resource like this book from Marie, it would have saved me a LOT of trial and error starting out, and it would have made me aware of different marketing options and strategies from day one.
In her book, Marie gives you a crash course on basic marketing, but in a way that specifically relates to the fiber arts. She starts by presenting these strategies in a way that will encourage you to focus your business model. I will absolutely be using the resources in this book, because focus and planning ahead are designing issues that I struggle with to this day. Have no fear, though! In addition to presenting valuable information about different marketing strategies and social media marketing; the book also provides worksheets for you to create actionable goals and workflows. After you read this book and complete the attached questionnaires, you will feel like you have your feet on the ground ready to head in the direction that you have planned for your business.
In addition to guiding you in your strategies and workflow, "Design It, Promote It, Sell It: Online Marketing for Your Crochet and Knit Patterns" will also give you the run down on how to evaluate your strategy with analytics. Analytics are an important part of marketing your designs because they will tell you what is working and what is not. This, in turn, will allow you to know where to focus your efforts so that you can get the most "bang for your buck" from your time investments.
Overall, "Design It, Promote It, Sell It: Online Marketing for Your Crochet and Knit Patterns" is a wonderful and comprehensive starting point for those of you out there wanting to start marketing your designs. It is also a fabulous resource for people who already design, like me, who feel they need a nudge to create a bit more direction for their business. I know that I will be using and benefiting from Marie's tools and strategies, and I think you will, too!
