Mock Knot Ear Warmers - Free Crochet Patterns

It's the "Seven Days of Scarfie" day number four, and those of you who have been me with the start will recognize this colorway from my Warm Wool-ish Mittens :)  Time to use the second half of the skein!

Joining me for the first time?  Here are the free Scarfie Yarn patterns I have released so far.  Don't miss the next three patterns either!  Follow me on Facebook and Instagram to hear when they are released :)

Now technically, today I have two patterns for you.  Why?  Because I promised you one-skein or two-for-one skein projects and I wanted to make sure that I offered you a way to used nearly all of your leftover yarn from the Warm Wool-ish Mittens pattern!  This way, you can make someone a nice matching set OR make 3 different gifts.  Not a bad deal for just one skein of yarn!

I'm calling these "mock knot" ear warmers because each has a variation of a knotted look.  The style featured above is a wrapped knot style, and the second is a twisted style.  These features along with the awesome texture make for some extra special and extra simple projects!

  • Ch: chain

  • Sl st: slip stitch

  • SC: Single crochet

  • HDC: half-double crochet

8 sts x 5 rows = 2" in HDC/Sl St stitch pattern

Finished Size:

Width = 3.5"

Diameter = 9.75"

Special Notes:

  • The chain stitches at the beginning of each row do not count as a stitch.

  • These patterns use a modified version of the seed stitch and will alternate HDC and sl sts across (instead of the traditional DC, SC). This makes a very stretchy fabric perfect for size "forgiving" ear warmers!

  • The size of this ear warmer is super easy to change! To adjust width, increase/decrease starting ch by 2. To adjust circumference, add or subtract as many rows as you would like.

Instructions (Twisted-Style):

Ch 13

Row 1: HDC in second ch from the hook, sl st in next st, *HDC, sl st, repeat from * across (12) Turn

Row 2-57: Ch 1, *HDC, sl st, repeat from * across.

Twist the rectangular shape as pictured and attach the ends together with sl sts across.  Tie off yarn and weave in ends.

Instructions (Wrapped Knot Style)

Ch 13

Row 1: HDC in second ch from the hook, sl st in next st, *HDC, sl st, repeat from * across (12) Turn

Row 2-55: Ch 1, *HDC, sl st, repeat from * across.

At the end of row 55, ch 5 and attach to row 1 with a sl st.  Continue working back and forth approx. 6 times in a zig zag formation between rows 1 and 55 (pictured).  Use a small piece of yarn to tie the chains together (to make a cinched look).

Make the wrap piece:  Ch 11, SC in second chain from the hook and SC across.  Continue to SC for 7 rows total.  Leave a long tail when tying off.

Assembly: Wrap the small around the chains with the rows oriented vertically.  Use the tail of yarn to sew the ends of the wrap piece together, making sure the seam is on the inner portion of the head band.  You can also work a few sewing stitches to hold the wrap piece in place on either side if desired.
